After a high profile move to AC Milan that saw him debut for
the club in a friendly in Baltimore, Oguchi Onyewu's career was soaring high. However, a few months later an unfortunate injury
in the USA's final World Cup Qualifier led to an extended rehabilitation
period. On his return to fitness the
30-year-old options at Milan were limited. That meant a loan move to Twente and
eventually a permanent transfer to Portugal's Sporting. Onyewu made one of the
biggest moves of the summer transfer season, leaving sporting for Malaga on a
season-long loan. At the time of the transfer, the Spanish side were going through a
very traumatic year filled with financial problems which led to selling some of
its key players like Salomon Rondon and Santa Cazorla to keep up. The
Anchovies are already keeping up this is showing to be one of their best
season as they are guaranteed to finish above AC Milan at the top of their
group. In today’s game against Anderlecht, Malaga twice took the lead thanks to goals
from captain Sergio Duda but were twice pegged back, first by Milan Jovanovic
then by Mbokani.
