In the ongoing 2012 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup being held in
Azerbaijan, the Flamingoes of Nigeria have qualified for the quarterfinals after
they won 3-0 in their match against Columbia on Saturday. The first goal came
from Halimatu Ayinde 32 minutes into the game and despite strong defense which hindered
the Flamingoes from scoring, Ayinde’s second goal in the 75th minute was enough to send Nigeria into the quarterfinals. However for Columbia, the hope of winning
was dashed when Diana Duarte miscued a header into her own net.
The Flamingoes finished with 7 points in group A along Canada
who also finished at 7 points in the group. In group B, Korea, France and
the US are all tied at 3 points, while in group C, Japan takes the lead with 6
points and following behind is Mexico at 3 points. In group D, China and
Germany are leading with 4 points respectively.
