The statement from the FA reads:
'Chelsea's John Obi Mikel has been given a three-match suspension to begin with immediate effect and fined £60,000 following an Independent Regulatory Commission hearing today [Thursday 6 December 2012].
The breach of FA RULE E3 was in relation to an incident that occurred in the match official's changing room, following the team's defeat to Manchester United, Mikel reportedly entered referee Mark Clattenburg's dressing room and threatened the official.
Why is Mikel facing the brunt after it seems he was racially
abused on the field? Well Christopher
Quinlan QC who is the independent chairman of the Regulatory Commission explained that the suspension would have been
even longer but for the fact that Mikel genuinely believed that he referee had
racially abused him at the time he threatened
the referee.
Prior to the ruling the FA carried out an investigation about allegations
that the referee racially abused the player and found that there was not a case
for him to answer.
