Nigeria’s coach, Sunday Oliseh content with Super Eagles draw against Tanzania.

In an interview with SuperSport’s Collins Okinyo, Super Eagle’s   coach Sunday Oliseh says he is satisfied with the 0-0 draw against Tanzania in African Nations Cup qualifier given that it was his debut appearance as coach for the team.  Former Super Eagles player turned coach is hopeful that he can learn lessons from the game to take the side forward.

"I can describe the match as a game of two halves, because we struggled in the first half but came back strongly in the second half containing the Tanzanians who also played very well," he told SuperSport.

With the absence of Nigeria’s goalkeeper, Enyeama, the Eagles had to rely on a fine performance from another debutant Wolves goalkeeper Carl Ikeme to keep the game goalless. The 29-year-old goalkeeper saved the day with some major saves to keep Nigeria in the game. Oliseh describes his performance as ‘brilliant’-"I am very happy with Ikeme's performance he was brilliant and he kept the Tanzanian strikers at bay," he also added. "It was a very important debut for him and thankfully for us he was A1."



Nigeria will take on Niger on Wednesday in a friendly in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.

WORLD CUP 2014: African sides so far.......................

The Super Eagles of Nigeria recorded their first World Cup win since 1998 against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday in their Group F, Super Eagle's returnee Osaze Odemwingie secured the 1-0 victory for Nigeria and the Stoke City striker dedicated the goal to his new born son via twitter.

Keshi's men are only 2 points behind Group leaders Argentina and they will take on South American team in their very last match on June 25 @ 12 P.M Eastern time.
To advance to the next stage in the WC is still tentative and depends on a win or draw from Nigeria and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Ghana played out a 2-2 draw against Germany in group G, Black Stars striker Asamoah Gyan and Jordan Ayew scored in the 63rd and 54th respectively for Ghana. They indeed gave Germany a run for their money as Germany opened the score line barely 6 minutes into the first half and they doubled their score 71 minutes into the game.

Ghana will take on Portugal on Thursday June 26 at 12 PM Eastern both teams are tied with 1 point apiece.

Algeria played a very impressive game against South Korea in Group H of the World Cup where they currently are favored to advance into the second round as they occupy the second spot in the group.
Algeria won 4-2 against South Korea on Sunday, recording their very first World Cup win since 1982.


With Cameroon on their way out of the World Cup; they are yet to record a win at the 2014 World Cup, the Indomitable Lions will play their very last game against host nation Brazil later today, they are at the bottom of their Group A.


Ivory Coast will play against Greece on June 24 in order to solidify their advancement to the second round in the World Cup. The Elephants are currently second in their Group C with 3 points behind group leaders Colombia.

FIFA looking into alledged 'homophobic' and racist chants from Mexican World Cup fans

Football's world governing body FIFA has started disciplinary proceedings against Mexico after a group of fans allegedly directed homophobic chants against Cameroon during their World Cup opener last Friday. Mexico are under investigation after their fans allegedly directed homophobic chants at Cameroon's goalkeeper Charles Itandje during their 1-0 win over the African side in their Group A match.

An anti-discrimination campaign group FARE that has been monitoring fan behavior in the World Cup reported the very shameful incidents to FIFA.
FIFA sources said they are also looking into the alleged discrimination by fans from Brazil, Russia and Croatia.
A FIFA spokesperson has confirmed that there are no other disciplinary proceedings launched at this point.

With the new anti-discrimination rules which were introduced by FIFA last year, first offense by fans or players can be punished by having to play a game behind closed doors.

No surgery required for Super Eagles debutant Leon Balogun

Doctors rule out surgery for injured Super Eagles star, Leon Balogun whose hopes for playing for Nigeria in the World Cup was restored as scan revealed no surgery is required on his right foot.

The German-born Nigerian defender made his international debut for Nigeria against Mexico on Wednesday, however, his debut appearance was threatenedd just five minutes into the game after he collided with an advertising board and he was substituted in the 65th minute of the goalless game. According to the statement released by Mr. Ben Alaiya, the Super Eagles Media officer in Abuja, Nigeria's medics had recommended surgery, however, doctors in Germany sais the injury was not serious as previously indicated and that no surgery was required.

"They told me that the two bones broken are in the base of my foot, which will heal on their own and will not require me to undergo any surgical operation," he was quoted as saying in a Super Eagles press statement.
"I was also told that within six weeks I should be in good condition and another two or four weeks for rehabilitation.
"Overall I should be back kicking the ball by the time the national team returns to camp."
Balogun also revealed he has commenced treatment and will be out for at least ten weeks. He says he has been in touch with the Nigerian medics and team officials.
"I have been in touch with Dr Ibrahim Gyaran, team administrator, Dayo Enebi and I must say I am totally overwhelmed by the show of love by Nigerians and fans across the world.
"I remain committed to overcome this initial setback and to return quickly for the World Cup preparations.
"I will keep fit while I try to get myself ready for future challenges."
If Balogun's recovery goes as planned, the German-born defender who was also eligible for Italy, will be available for the Super Eagles' World Cup preparations, which starts in May, when they face Scotland at Craven Cottage on May 28.

ITS A WEST AFRICAN WORLD CUP! Congrats to Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Algeria

After months of World Cup qualifiers which eventually ended in Tuesday’s second leg play-off showdown, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Algeria, and Ghana just sealed their places as Africa’s representative for next year’s World Cup in Brazil.

NIGERIA: Current African champions Nigeria became the first African side to qualify for the 2014 World Cup after beating Ethiopia 2-0 in Calabar on Saturday. Chelsea starlet on loan to Liverpool Victor Moses booked the first goal for the Super Eagles when he converted from the penalty spot after Ethiopia’s Aynalem Hailu was fouled by the referee for handling the ball in the area. The second goal for the Nigerian team came later on in the game; substitute Victor Obinna sealed Nigeira’s place in Brazil when his free-kick found its way to the back of the net giving Nigeria a comfortable 4-1 aggregate win.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria qualified for the World Cup in 1994 and current head coach, Stephen Keshi captained the team back then, Keshi will once again make his appearance at the World Cup, only this time, he will be leading an entire team.  The Super Eagles also qualified for the World Cup in 1998, 2002 and 2010, and for the 2014 World Cup, Nigeria is now through to their 5th finals.

CAMEROON: Cameroon became the second West African nation to qualify for the World Cup right after Nigeria. The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon are back in action after years of confusion, while they still have a lot of work to do ahead of the 2014 WC, they were able to defeat Tunisia 4-1 convincingly in the second leg of the play-offs which off cause thrilled their fans across the world. Spoke to one fan Samuel, he said: “I can’t wait to fly to Brazil to witness mycountry play next year.”
On their way to Brazil in their 7th World Cup appearance, let’s all hope that Coach Finke will be able to put the house in order. Already, he seems to be in the right direction with Samuel Eto’o back in the team and with the county in focus and not individuals, the Indomitable Lions are bound to make a comeback. Till date, their WC best performance was in the 1990  where they bowed out of the tournament in the Quarter-finals.

IVORY COAST: Joining Nigeria and Cameroon, Cote D’Ivoire has also qualified for their third World Cup in a row after ruling out Senegal on a 4-2 aggregate.  However, despite their victorious celebration, the fans are still unhappy with the team’s coach. Local fans including journalists of the African favorites are all calling for the removal of current head coach Sabri Lamouchi whom according to them ‘lacks depth of knowledge and proven experience’ they will need for the upcoming World Cup. The Elephants’ jittery performance against the Teranga Lions in Casablanca, Morocco on Saturday rekindled a waning animosity for the former Inter Milan midfielder, who is now Ivory Coast coach. The Elephants completed their race for the World Cup after coming from behind to hold the Teranga Lions of Senegal to a 1-1 draw in the playoff second leg on Saturday in Casablanca and advance 4-2 on aggregate.
Team captain and current Galatasaray striker who led the Elephants to their first ever World Cup 7 years ago, Didier Drogba is looking to rewrite history this time. The Ivoirians failed to go past the group stage during their two previous appearances in 2006 (Germany) and 2010 (South Africa)
“We want to do better at next year’s World Cup. The previous two were difficult,” he concluded. 

GHANA: The Black stars of Ghana booked their tickets to next year's World Cup finals in Brazil, despite losing 2-1 to Egypt in the second leg of their play-off.Ghana made it to their third successive finals thanks to a 6-1 victory in the first leg from last month which helped them win on a 7-3 on aggregate. The Pharaohs, who needed to score at least five unanswered goals to turn the tie their favor worked very hard backed by a vociferous crowd but the expected result remained elusive.
Ghana made their debut at the World Cup in 2006 in Germany, before reaching the quarters four years later in South Africa, losing to Uruguay painfully on penalties.

Fighting for a chance for Brazil 2014, Amr Zaki gave Egypt a faint hope in Caira when he scored after 25 minutes, Gedo rifled in a second late on. However, Black stars returnee Kevin-Prince Boateng struck on 89 minutes to give Ghana the last word.


ALGERIA: Joining 4 West African countries, Algeria qualified for the 2014 World Cup after beating Burkina Faso 1-0 in their World Cup  second leg play-off in Blida. Algeria's captain Madjid Bougherra led by example scoring the decisive goal against Burkina Faso and hand Les Fennecs the final African slot for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Bougherra’s 49th minute effort ensured the North African side sealed their place in Brazil on the away goals rule after a 3-3 aggregate draw. Trailing by one goal after last month's first leg, Algeria showcased a strong and reseliant side as they were bent on rewriting the history books with their debut qualification to next year's World Cup.
