Ivorian midfielder Yaya Touré leads the pack as highest paid at AFCON


Manchester City player Yaya Toure is the highest paid athlete at the 2013 African Cup of Nations, the 29-year-old midfielder made the top spot as  list only covers players participating in the tournament, in actual fact, Captain of Cameroon’s national team Samuel Eto’o who currently plays as striker for Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala is the highest paid player in Africa, he is also the 10th highest paid football player in the world. Eto’o bags an astounding $27 million per season in addition to endorsement deals from puma and ford; he however did not make the list due to Cameroon’s failure to qualify for this year’s Nations Cup.
City Press released the top list of earners in the 2013 AFCON, the list was derived from research on surveys carried out by reputable financial services sources during the 2011/12 season.The figures refer only to gross annual salaries and do not include other perks such as bonuses, allowances and off-field endorsement deals.

Nigerian international John Mikel Obi makes the list at number 7, the Chelsea FC star makes $110 000 a week, and his annual salary of $ 6.5 million a year makes him the highest-paid footballer in Nigeria.

Ivorian defender and Manchester City player Kolo Toure pockets an estimated $8.5 million a year from Man City.

Ghanaian skipper Asamoah Gyan who currently plays for Al Ain in United Arab Emirates on loan after he left English Premier League side Sunderland in September 2011 for $9.5 million earns a whopping $12 million a year.

Togolese captain Emmanuel Adebayor who is currently on loan at Tottenham Hotspur FC from Manchester City pulls a weekly salary of $220 000. The 28-year-old striker sits at number 4 with an estimated $15 million in annual salary.

Malian captain Seydou Keita who plays for Dalian Aerbin FC in the Chinese Super League is the third highest player in AFCON with an annual salary of $16 million.Forbes.com

Elephants captain Didier Drogba who moved from Chelsea to Chinese Super League side Shanghai Shenhua after making a name for himself at Stamford Bridge currently earns $314 000 a week, the Ivorian legend earns an estimated $18 million a year.

Current African Footballer of the year Yaya Toure  tops the list of earners in the Nations Cup with an estimated $22 million in annual salary. Forbes listed Touré as the highest paid African player in the English Premier league with a weekly wage of $320 000. Yaya makes the list of top earners in the Nations Cup along 2 other of his fellow  compatriots (Drogba, and Kolo).
