Zambia Football Association are planning an official challenge to Lionel Messi’s record
for the most goals scored in a calendar year in the hope of getting recognition for striker Godfrey Chitalu's feat
of scoring 107 goals in 1972. This is
coming just after Messi’s record breaking goals which took him past German
Muller’s officially recognized 40-yeear-old record of 85 goals.
Speaking to bbcsports, Football Asssociation of Zambia’s spokesman
Eric Mwanza said they would present evidence to FIFA to show that the former
Kabwe Warriors striker Godfrey Chitalu, who won Zambia's player of the year
award five times, scored 107 goals in 1972.
"We want to make it very clear that it is not a
question of authenticating, or trying to verify or see if he actually scored
the goals - that is not in question," he insisted.
"What is in question now is why has he not been
recognised, and that is what we are looking at now.
"We are sending communication to the Secretary General
of Fifa, Mr Jerome Valcke, to look again into the matter of Godfrey
Chitalu."
Chitalu, who scored the goals in at least four domestic
competitions and also played for Zambia's national team, went on to become
national coach. He died in 1993 when a plane carrying the team crashed near
Gabon.
