Tsgabu Grmay hopes to become first African to win the 2013 Tour de France

Ethiopian cyclist Tsgabu Grmay is set on becoming the first African to win the Tour de France and from his performance at the just concluded African Cycling Championship where he was described by Van Zyl (Director of the UCI center in South Africa) as “the revelation of the 2012 championships, ” Grmany could actually achieve this dream. The 21-year-old only missed out on victory in the individual time trial by only three seconds after leading all the intermediate times, clocking the same speed as the Eritreans (current champions of African Cycling Championship) in the team time trial.

Tsabu Grmay started cycling in 2008 with his brother and father. He began competing in local races, winning his first event. He competed at the 2010 African Champs which was held in Rwanda and finished at third place just after he was selected for the 2009 Ethiopian National team. In the same year, he trained at the UCI African Continental Cycling center in South Africa and later in 2011 competed in the Tour of South Africa and Tour of Gabon. He later joined the MTN-Qhubeka team in 2012, Grmay won gold in the under-23 individual time trial in Burkina Faso and also finished second overall in the senior standings.

  2. I am delighted by this young mans talent and look forward to see his development. I am an Ethiopian cycling champion in 1984 and have took part in the 1980 Moscow olympics in the team time trial for Ethiopia as 18 years old. We were in a different level then. I might have competed with his father in the 80`s. I then had a dream to some day take part in the TDF but it never happend. Now I have the chance to live my dream through Tsgabu. I will be in France and follow the race when ever he takes part! Good luck bro!!! Alemayehu "Gimondi"
