All in preparation for the upcoming Nations cup, Nigeria’s
Super Eagles today took on Catalonia in a friendly. The Eagles held hosts
Catalonia to a 1-1 at the Cornelia El-Prat Stadium in Barcelona.
The Catalonians were able to secure the first and only game
for their side just 3 minutes into the game courtesy of a penalty kick that was
neatly taken by Sergio Gonzalez. Portland Timbers striker, Bright Dike however
balanced the score sheet for Nigeria in the 54th minutes. Today’s
1-1 draw shows progress for the Super Eagles as they suffered an embarrassing
5-0 defeat in their last meeting with the Spanish team 5 years ago. The Spanish region of
Catalonia is not affiliated to either FIFA or UEFA as they are not a state, but
Catalan players are full Spanish citizens who are eligible to play for Spain.
Nigeria will meet Cape Verde on January 7th to intensify
preparation for the 2013 African Cup of Nations.
