It is the first time the Ethiopian squad has qualified
for the AFCON competition in 31 years, and even though they are a bit rusty,
the Walyas Antelopes are confident they will defy expectations and
proceed to the knock-out stage of the tournament.
In a rare and unexpected achievement, the Walyas beat Tanzania 2-1 on Saturday to claim a triumphant
end of preparations ahead of the Orange Africa cup of nations 2013 to kick
off Saturday January 19 in South Africa.US based, Fuad Ibrahim put the
Walia Antelopes ahead just 13 into the encounter but Tanzania’s Shaaban Nditi
put both sides at the same level in the 51st. 18 minutes after, Shemelese
Bikele’s header ended the ball at the bottom of the net making it 2-1 for the Walias.
In their AFCON warm-up matches, Ethiopia beat Niger 1-0 and
drew 1-1 with Tunisia before Saturday’s win over Tanzania. They are now
preparing to face title holders Zambia on 21 January in South African city
Nelspruit.
